Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, we recognise the importance of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). As the UK becomes an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. Through the teaching of languages, we aim to expose children to and prepare them for the exciting opportunities the world has for them. Our current MFL taught is French, and we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages.

We use Language Angels to support our teaching of French. Language skills are taught progressively through regular lessons, and children acquire new vocabulary. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through various engaging activities:

  • Games – to develop vocabulary through repetition, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
  • Role-play and conversational work – relating to situations the children may find themselves in the future.
  • Action songs and rhymes – to develop phonetic skills, memory skills, and further vocabulary.
  • Mime – to associate vocabulary with kinaesthetic learning.
  • Reading and writing quality materials – as their confidence and skill grow, children record their work through pictures, captions, and sentences.

We celebrate European Day of Languages, and children learn about France and what it is like to live in this country. As a result of our curriculum design, children develop a love of languages and learning about other cultures. They are equipped with the skills and confidence to continue learning French or embark on the new challenge of learning another language.

Ventrus MAT

Ventrus (formerly The Primary Academies Trust) was set up in 2011 by a group of like minded headteachers who wanted to build a stable and secure platform from which they could grow a network of excellent schools.
