Computing

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, we aim to prepare our learners for their futures by giving them opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills, including resilience and respect for using technology, that will equip them for our ever-changing digital world. We believe that computing should teach children how to use technology in various ways and, most importantly, to understand how to use technology safely. We aim to ensure that all children become digitally literate and able to make informed choices in a digital world. The use of technology is essential in many aspects of life, and children need to be equipped with the skills to embrace emerging technology and use it confidently and efficiently. Our intention is that computing also supports children’s creativity and cross-curricular learning to engage and enrich their experiences in school.

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, we teach computing using the aims and objectives from the National Curriculum, supported by the DfE's Teach Computing scheme of learning and Purple Mash. The core of our computing teaching allows children to follow a progression of age-appropriate knowledge and skills as they move throughout the school to become computing specialists. We teach all children to use the internet safely and how to safeguard their personal data when using websites and apps.

  • All children have daily access to Chromebooks for computing lessons as well as for cross-curricular learning opportunities.
  • Children are taught the age-appropriate, key computing vocabulary for their block of work and individual lessons.
  • They use a range of devices in each Key Stage, working independently or in pairs. Online safety (e-safety) is taught at the beginning of each term and whenever relevant to highlight its importance.
  • Teachers assess children’s progress against the National Curriculum objectives.
  • All children have the opportunity to access computers or iPads to support and enhance their learning.

As a result, children become proficient in computing and can use and apply their skills and knowledge to enhance their learning across the curriculum. When children leave Georgeham CofE Primary School, they are competent and safe users of technology with an understanding of how it works. They have developed the skills to express themselves creatively using digital media and are equipped to apply their skills in computing to different challenges going forward. Our children are well prepared to use technology in their futures, both at home and in secondary school.

Ventrus MAT

Ventrus (formerly The Primary Academies Trust) was set up in 2011 by a group of like minded headteachers who wanted to build a stable and secure platform from which they could grow a network of excellent schools.
